Kindra slipped away each time memory and consciousness began to return. A few sharp gunshots and a burst of motion that felt like flying brought her closer to reality. Multiple voices shouting unintelligible words, the clank and slide of a van door, and then Kindra was jostled even more. Before she could pull herself completely into the waking world, the van door closed and tires squealed.
âI canât believe sheâs still out. Did she really faint?â Deep, gravelly, sharply enunciated words. Aaron Tanvers. Doppelgänger. Marine. AWOL.
âDoes she look conscious?â That voice needed no processing. Dru Calver. Enemy. Hotshot. Kidnapper. Bomb Squad. Sexy as hell.
âItâs just such a movie cliché. She swooned.â Aaron again. âAre we sure she didnât get hit?â
âI checked. I donât see any blood.â That voice sent shudders through Kindra and a jolt of icy shock that almost sent her back to unconsciousness. The canât-possibly-be-Ryce audibly swallowed. âItâs my fault. I shouldnât have shocked her like that.â
âYeah, seriously. That,â Aaron said. âWhat the hell was that reaction about?â
The pause in the conversation felt loaded. Heavy. Explosive.
Ryce huffed. âIâm her brother. She thought I died a few years ago.â
âShit.â There was a quiet thud, like someone sitting down too quickly. âYeah, never mind. I think youâre fucking lucky she passed out instead of trying to kill you.â
No way are they having this conversation without me. Kindraâs head lolled when she shifted. She tried to sit up; something across her chest held her in place.
Atropos bless it! If Dru tied me up again, Iâm going to strangle her.
A rush of frustrated anger was just enough to shove Kindraâblinking, disoriented, and strugglingâinto the world.
âEasy.â Ryceâs voice spoke low into her ear. âYouâre not tied down. Thatâs the seat belt.â
Seat belt? Kindra blinked, and the last of the haze cleared from her vision. They were in the middle row of a three-row, bench-seat passenger van. Looking down, she saw the gray nylon strap of the seat belt that had kept her from moving.
That and her supposedly dead brotherâs hands locked around her biceps.
âIâm sorry. Atropos bless it, Kinny, Iâm sorry. But you need to stay calm and listen.â
Betrayal and relief and fury crashed together in Kindraâs chest, creating an icy detachment that protected her, kept her from feeling anything, and gave her the strength to strike.
Kindra latched on to one of the pressure points in Ryceâs wrist. He winced and released her, but didnât move away fast enough to escape her other hand wrapping around his throat.
âYou fucking liar! We thought you were dead, you asshole!â
Arms locked around Kindraâs chest, pulling her away from Ryce.
âBreathe.â Dru tightened her grip when Kindra tried to pull away. âI know youâre pissed, and Iâm sorry, but killing your brother will only make things worse.â
Iâm sorry? From Ryce, those words were understandable. From Dru, those two words flash-reassembled a series of clues, and then handed Kindra a realization on a silver platter.
Dru had known Ryceâs name. She said he was gone, but never said he was dead. She knew too much about Kindraâs childhood.
